  • Wesley Fofana was caught reading a piece of paper before Real Madrid scored
  • The Chelsea defender switched off as Madrid started a short corner
  • Frank Lampard's charges will have to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the second leg

Hawk-eyed football fans spotted Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana reading a note just seconds before they conceded a second goal against Real Madrid.

Chelsea were convincingly beaten by the record Champions League winners at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio were enough to heap more misery on Frank Lampard's charges. It was the second loss for the club legend, who was brought in on a caretaker basis until the end of the season.

Fofana was one of Chelsea's brightest sparks in Madrid despite getting an early yellow card and having to deal with the incessant threat that is Vinicius Junior.

However, the French defender was seemingly at fault for the second Los Blancos goal scored by Asensio. The Carlo Ancelotti side worked a short corner, with Vinicius squaring the ball to Asensio on the edge of the area.

Fofana reading a note

Before the Brazilian does so, Fofana is seen reading a piece of paper. Ben Chilwell had just been sent off for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity and Lampard had reshuffled his backline.

Fofana wanted to get the gist of the new instructions but chose the wrong time to do so. By the time he switched on again, Asensio was already rifling the ball towards Chelsea's area and to make matters worse, the ball went through Fofana's legs and there was nothing Kepa Arrizabalaga could have done about it.

The Blues now have a steep mountain to climb next week in West London. They face Brighton at the weekend, looking to bring to an end their goalscoring problems.

Chelsea's next fixtures

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that fans have jokingly suggested Frank Lampard could be sacked before the end of the season after taking a look at Chelsea's next six fixtures.

Lampard made a sensational return to Stamford Bridge mid-last week as caretaker boss to replace Graham Potter, who was sacked after a disastrous run of form.

His return came barely two years after he himself was axed at the club as manager, with Thomas Tuchel taking his place.
