  • Kompany has guided Burnley back to the Premier League in his first attempt

Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany is fast establishing himself as a top manager in his fairly short stint in the dugout.

Since taking charge of Anderlecht as a player-manager in 2019, Kompany has shown he has the stuff to become a world-class manager as his first full season as manager ended up with the Belgian side qualifying for the Europa Conference League.

Fast forward to June 2022 and Kompany made the risky switch to Championship club Burnley following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

It goes without saying that the club’s objective in the 2022/23 campaign was to get back to the Premier League, and under the guidance of Kompany, the club did just that.

With his aggressive, no-nonsense style of coaching coupled with a playing style that does not allow opponents in, Burnley secured promotion back to English top flight with seven games to spare after an away win over Middlesbrough.

Too soon for Kompany to move on?

Kompany’s instant impact at Burnley will surely have other clubs monitoring him, and according to The Sun, Tottenham is among those clubs.

It is believed Daniel Levy sees Kompany as a manager who can bring a new dimension to the club, to possibly end their silverware drought.

Being only 37, Kompany is a young manager with presumably modern ideas in football, and that could be exactly what Tottenham need, after spells with veterans Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte failed to yield the desired result.

However, it is also difficult to ignore the fact that Kompany making the switch to Tottenham is extremely risky for several reasons.

The Lilywhites are considered the ‘Big Six’ in the Premier League and part of Kompany’s objectives, should he take the job, would be to keep the club competitive among the other big boys.

Failure to do so would inevitably birth sacking talks, something no new manager wants to experience. The likes of Frank Lampard learnt this the hard way after taking the Chelsea job.

In contrast, considering the work he has done at Burnley, it might be in Kompany’s best interest to stay with The Clarets, who will only likely want him to keep them in the Premier League next season as a bare minimum.

Such targets perfectly suit a young manager in the Premier League, as it offers space to perhaps take some risks in terms of tactics which, if they yield, could bring forth incredible results. Burnley could end up in European places.

Ten Hag makes the day of young fans

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Erik Ten Hag’s noble move to a young fan.

The Manchester United gaffer recently made the day of a young fan while driving away from the club's training facility at Carrington.

The boy asked the former FC Twente boss to guess his favourite player, and he correctly guessed Alejandro Garnacho, possibly taking a hint from the kid's scarf.
