Legendary Ghanaian midfielder, Stephen Appiah has disclosed the personal sacrifices he made to improve the image of the Black Stars.

According to the former Ghana captain, there was a time when nobody wanted to play for the national team.

However, as leader of the team, he has revealed the lengths he pursued to ensure players would even honour invites to the Black Stars.

"There was a time nobody wanted to play [for] the Black Stars. There was a time I used my money to pay plane tickets. I also paid winning bonuses so when you see what is happening today, you feel bad," Appiah told Sompa Sports.

The 42-year-old is revered in Ghana for playing a significant role in the country's first-ever qualification to the World Cup in 2006.

Appiah starred as the west Africans reached the last 16 in Germany in 2006, also being a member of the famous side that made it to the quarter-finals in South Africa four years later.

The former Juventus player made 67 appearances and scored 14 goals for the Black Stars.

Appiah laments Ghanaian football

In related coverage, Sports Brief reported on former Black Stars captain, Appiah expressing disappointment in Ghana and the current state of national football.

The former Juventus and Fenerbache star believes the ex-players and legends of the country's national team should be more involved in the running of the game.

Appiah's recent involvement with the Ghanaian national team was when he played the role of team manger under former national coach, Kwesi Appiah.

Appiah rubbishes Ghana return rumours

Former captain of the Black Stars, Appiah also rubbished claims he was training for a comeback to the national team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

As Sports Brief reported, footage of the ex-Ghana star training went viral after his ex-teammate, Asamoah Gyan declared his intentions of playing again.

However, in denying there was any truth to claims he would feature for the Black Stars again, Appiah explained the footage was shot for an ad campaign.
