  • Arsenal dropping two points over the weekend might come back to haunt them
  • The result left Manchester City with a rather clear pathway to retaining their title
  • However, the defending champions have other obstacles they need to contend with first

Arsenal's trip to Merseyside on April 9 delivered one of the most exciting games we have seen this season.

We have grown accustomed to Jurgen Klopp's side chasing down the title, but this time around, it was a case of the hunter becoming the hunted, with Arsenal keen on getting maximum points.

In the end, both sides settled for a point apiece, a result that possibly paves way for Manchester City to make it three consecutive title wins.

Save for Arsenal fans on social media, many fans seem to think that the Citizens will retain their title, and it's hard to argue with their logic.

A superior squad and goal difference, a game in hand, Arsenal's remaining trips to the Etihad and St. James Park and all the other whatnots, City are the favourites.

However, Arsenal have slight advantages on their side that Mikel Arteta can use in the next 8 games. Arteta is gunning to beat his master and become the youngest coach to win the Premier League.

1. Fewer games

Arsenal's elimination from the Europa League meant that Arteta could solely focus on the Premier League. Whilst Manchester City faces a cramped schedule of a game every three days, Arsenal will more or less play weekend to weekend.

City's schedule could ease up should Bayern Munich beat them in the Champions League quarterfinals or Sheffield United in the FA Cups semifinals, but knowing the perfectionist that is Guardiola, that won't come easily.

2. 'Stronger' squad

It sounds like a joke listing this as a plus on Arsenal's side, given the embarrassment of riches Guardiola has. Imagine having the luxury of withdrawing the robotic Erling Haaland for a World Cup winner. Or Jack Grealish for Phil Foden?

However, a close introspection shows that Arteta and Edu Gaspar have made considerable steps to bridge the gap. The signing of Leandro Trossard in January remains the most ingenious piece of business in recent times.

Not even the injury to Gabriel Jesus could derail Arsenal's momentum. And when we thought Rob Holding will drop the ball when William Saliba limped off, the 'English Maldini' stepped up. To add the cherry to the cake, Jorginho was drafted in to provide cover for the injury-prone Thomas Partey.

Save for the right-back position, where Takehiro Tomiyasu is out for the rest of the season, Arsenal have able replacements in all positions. They might not be up to City's standards, but the important thing is that they are there. Not just academy raw inexperienced kids like a few seasons back.

Disclaimers

That said, it should be noted that these kinds of run-ins are what bring the best out of Guardiola. The Spanish manager has won 145 points in the last 6 seasons in the last 10 games of the season, the most of any team.

His experience might come in handy against a fledgling Arsenal side still learning the ropes of lasting the mile.

Should the core of Manchester City's squad remain intact, they would easily retain the title. Doesn't matter if they play a game after every 24 hours.

After all, all they need to do is win their remaining games and voila - Guardiola would have managed to turn the Premier League into a farmers league.

Meanwhile, on April 26th at 7 PM GMT at the Etihad - we will be there no matter what.

Arsenal's fixture list

Sports Brief has reported that Arsenal are set for a busy Premier League schedule that could potentially decide their title fate.

With no other engagements apart from top-flight football, Arteta's men will now switch their focus to their upcoming trip to West Ham United.

While that match looks easy on paper, the Hammers are expected to give their London rivals a run for their money as they are also trying to avoid relegation.
