  • Petit believes the series of jeers fans aimed at the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner are 'an insult to football'

Paris Saint-Germain have been told they are 'not a football club' after a section of the club's fanbase subjected Lionel Messi to boos and insults.

Messi has been the target of irate PSG fans, who believe the mercurial Argentine playmaker is not committed to the club's cause.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding his future, the 35-year-old was booed for the second successive game at the Parc des Princes just before PSG fell to a shock home defeat against Olympique Lyon, GOAL reports.

Reacting to the treatment meted out to the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, former France international, Emmanuel Petit believes the veteran should be shown greater respect.

“When I hear that, for me, it’s an insult to football,” Petit said on RMC Sport via PSGtalk.
“I know that today, there is only a pack of dogs who only think of drooling on Neymar and Messi… If I have any advice for Messi: Get out of this club! "

Petit, a former World Cup winner, aimed another dig at the club by suggesting the club's model is not fit for purpose.

"This club is not a football club. It’s a pre-retirement club, even for 20-year-old players. No player has progressed since joining PSG. Is it Messi’s fault? He’s a maestro with a stick; it’s up to him to have players around him who make the effort."

Messi responds to PSG heckling

Sports Brief previously reported on Messi being subjected to jeers from PSG fans prior to another home defeat in the French top flight on Sunday evening.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has been in the bad books of some supporters since their round-of-16 Champions League exit against Bayern Munich.

Despite the taunts, Messi found the humour in the continued heckling from the club's fanbase, amid rumours he will depart the club at the end of the season.

Messi booed yet again

Sports Brief also reported on PSG supporters have persisted in jeering Messi to express their displeasure towards the World Cup winner.

He had hostile treatment in the home loss to Rennes before the international break and was given no respite following the return of club football.

The boos and whistling aimed at Messi proved to be something of an omen for a fourth Ligue 1 defeat for the Parisians since the turn of the year.
