England 1966 World Cup Winner Nobby Stiles Dies at 78 After Illness

Entire football fraternities in the United Kingdom have been thrown into deep mourning following the death of England 1966 World Cup winner Nobby Stiles who died at the age of 78.

The former Manchester United star was said to have battled against sickness for years before he passed away on Friday, October 30, according to his family.

According to the report on UK Sun, Nobby Stiles battled against Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia for 18 years and had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012.

He played every minute of England's victorious 1966 FIFA World Cup campaign.

"The Stiles family are sad to announce that Nobby Stiles passed away peacefully today surrounded by his family after a long illness.

"The family kindly ask for privacy at this sad time."

England legend Gary Lineker and other football stakeholders in the world have been paying tributes for the death of Nobby.

During his active playing time, Nobby Stiles played 311 games for Manchester United and won the League title in 1965 and 1967 and also won the European Cup the following year.

Nobby went on to play for Middlesbrough between 1971-73 and Preston North End from 1973-75 before he hanged his football boots.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Ryan Giggs recounted his first day of meeting manager Louis van Gaal saying he punched him in the stomach.

The Manchester United legend was employed to work as assistant under the experienced tactician at the Old Trafford between 2014 and 2016.

Both managers inspired the club to an FA Cup title alongside the likes of star-studded players including Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria.

However, Van Gaal had a tough time at the Premier League club as he was heavily knocked for his tactics and poor deals in the transfer market.

The manager was fired in 2016 after guiding the Red Devils to a fifth-place finish that season, despite defeating Crystal Palace to the FA Cup at Wembley.

And now Giggs has shared the moments with the manager at the club as well as his own exit. Wales national team coach Giggs told Jamie Carragher’s Greatest Game podcast.
