  • Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro was hired as Super Eagles coach in May 2022 to replace Austine Eguavoen
  • The contract of the 62-year-old has reportedly been extended by Nigeria's football chiefs for another year
  • However, Peseiro has also been given a mandate by the NFF if he wants to stay as Super Eagles manager

Jose Peseiro's contract as Super Eagles gaffer has reportedly been extended until 2024, which means the Portuguese tactician will be in charge of the team for AFCON in the Ivory Coast if Nigeria qualifies.

The former Venezuela handler was appointed as national coach in May 2022 by Amaju Pinnick, following the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

Austine Eguavoen was placed in charge of the Nigerian national team for the World Cup playoffs but he failed to get the ticket, which led to the arrival of Peseiro.

A caveat on Peseiro's contract

According to the report by Owngoal, there is a condition included in Peseiro's contract with the NFF, which states he can only be sacked if he fails to see the team qualify or fails to win AFCON.

With the next tournament postponed until January next year, this means the new NFF board under Ibrahim Gusau will have to wait and see what results the Portuguese manager can achieve over the coming months.

With the next AFCON qualifiers coming in June, the Super Eagles are currently topping their group with nine points and will face Sierra Leone in the next tie.

Amunike wants to coach Nigeria

Sports Brief had also reported on Emmanuel Amunike's interest in coaching Nigeria, believing he is the one to turn around the fortunes the three-time African champions.

As a player, he was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and was also named the continent's best footballer in the same year.

Amunike explained that he wants to be the head tactician of the Nigerian national team and lead decisions from the top, having twice served as an assistant coach.
