Mamelodi Sundowns legend Daniel 'Mambush' Mudau assaulted teammate Charles Motlohi following another crushing final defeat to Kaizer Chiefs; this time in the 2001 BP Top Eight decider.

Former footballer Sipho Nunens has revealed what truly happened that infamous day, saying according to The Citizen:

"You know what happened is that when they had to take penalties, Charles refused and (Michael) Manzini had to step up. But he was injured and he missed it. That is when Charles made a comment and said, ‘this Shangaan boy has cost us’.

"That is when Mambush (Mudau) got angry because he was in good condition to take the penalty but he had refused. And now he is saying, ‘this Shangaaan is costing us’. That is when he slapped him.”

Having been charged by the Premier Soccer League for the incident, a remorseful Mudau went on to apologise unreservedly for hitting Motlohi.

He said:

"I had no right to behave in that manner, I apologise to youngsters who regard me as a role model, PSL sponsors, Sundowns management and mates. I also apologised to Charles in the dressing room."
