  • Manchester United finished their 0-0 draw against bottom-placed Southampton with 10 men at the weekend
  • Brazilian midfielder Casemiro was sent off for a bad tackle on Carlos Alcaraz
  • Southampton's Romeo Lavia made a similar tackle last night but escaped punishment

Manchester United's momentum was halted by a reality check 7-0 loss to rivals Liverpool. They bounced back midweek with a 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa League but drew against Southampton in the league.

The weekend game saw Erik Ten Hag's men finish the match with nine men after the Brazilian midfielder was shown a straight red card after a VAR review of his tackle on Carlos Alcaraz.

The former Real Madrid midfielder walked off the pitch inconsolable even though his teammates saw out the game with 10 men against relegation threatened Southampton.

Southampton lost 2-0 to Brentford last night, but it was young midfielder Romeo Lavia's bad tackle on Christian Norgaard that caught the fans' attention, and as reported by Give Me Sport, he was lucky to escape a red card.

United fans were not pleased with the officiating and felt the player's tackle was worse than their midfielders and should have been sent off.

''Lavia did the EXACT same challenge as Casemiro did at the weekend, tonight. No red card. But because he isn't a Manchester United player no one cares''

@_scottsaunders wrote:

''So I see Romeo Lavia made the same tackle as Casemiro did at the weekend (but worse) and didn’t even get a booking then''

@NortFX wrote:

''So lemme just understand something, when it's Lavia he's intending to pass, it's unlucky and he didn't have time to think. When it's Casemiro, intent didn't matter, wasn't unlucky and had time to think about it''

''That Lavia’s tackle yesterday was the same with the Casemiro own. Lavia wasn’t sent off. Now that’s the inconsistency we have been talking about.''

Antony tried to console Casemiro

Sports Brief earlier reported that compatriot Antony tried to console Casemiro after the tough-tackling midfielder received his marching orders.

The former Ajax winger promised to win the game for the winger, but he was unable to as the game ended in a goalless draw which left United 16 points behind leaders Arsenal.
