  • Arsenal still enjoy a five point lead from Manchester City in second place after 27 rounds of matches
  • Historically, a team with 90 points is always likely to win the title but the Gunners could win with less
  • Another consideration is whether Manchester City are able to win or only draw their remaining games

Arsenal are still flying high in the league after 27 rounds of matches, and it might be time to start fathoming the thought of Gunners lifting the famous Premier League trophy.

With just 11 games of the season left to play, Arsenal still have a five-point lead at the top of the table, with Manchester City their only genuine threat at the moment.

Manchester United’s 7-0 defeat to Liverpool, coupled with a 0-0 draw against relegation-threatened Southampton in the space of a week all but confirmed they would not be competing for the title, at least not for another season.

How many points Arsenal need

Historically speaking, the most competitive title races have seen the winners accrue an impressive number of points, but 90 has always been the magic number.

Just as the 40-point mark is seen as the safety cut for teams fighting relegation, any team that clocks 90 points in the league should surely consider themselves title contenders.

According to Premier League's official website, Arsenal currently have 66 points after 27 games and they need a maximum of 25 points out of a possible remaining 33 to ensure they are champions.

This basically means Arteta’s men can afford to perhaps drop a maximum of three points in their remaining 11 games and the title race will remain in their hands, assuming Man City win all their remaining games.

If the Gunners take the minimum 25 points required, they will be Champions for the first time since 2003/2004 with 91 points.

However, all this is in theory and a lot can happen between now and the end of the season.

Guardiola’s message to De Bruyne

Sports Brief also reported on Kevin de Bruyne being subjected to some rare criticism from Pep Guardiola recently.

The Belgian has found himself on the bench of late, with the standards he has set for himself coming into question.

De Bruyne came off the bench in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and only lasted 64 minutes against Newcastle.
