For a professional football player, the one thing that motivates one to keep on going is game time.

One of the biggest pointers that perhaps it might be time to leave a club or perhaps go out on loan is when a player starts to spend more time on the bench than in action on the football pitch.

This was the case with Harambee Stars midfielder Victor Wanyama at Tottenham, as the Kenyan slowly fell down the pecking order, despite still being in his prime.

Wanyama, 28, only made four appearances for Spurs in the 2019/2020 this season with his only start coming at a league cup loss to Colchester.

His future was in limbo since the start of the season when he nearly signed for Belgian outfit Club Brugge Spurs in a potential KSh 1.7 billion (£13.6m) deal which failed to go through before deadline day.

Since the botched move, nothing was the same at Wanyama at Spurs and he eventually secured a move to the MLS, with Montreal Impact taking up his services in March 2020.

Despite an initial slow start to life at the MLS, Wanyama is now an integral part of Montreal Impact’s midfield and if his recent performances are anything to go by, he seems to have rediscovered his passion and love for the game.

This was evident on Wednesday, August 4 when he was sent off for squaring off with an opponent in a game where his side blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2.

Big Vik is also quite active on his social media, regularly updating his international and Kenyan fanbase on his activities on the pitch.

An ardent follower of the midfielder will notice that he loves to use captions like “Passion”; “The hard work continues” and so on.

More recently, he was on target for his side from the penalty spot as he helped his side to a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls.

Apparently, the club also trusts the Kenyan to score crucial spot kicks for them and that cannot be a coincidence.

In February, Wanyama was back in Kenya where he did an interview naming some of the midfield maestros he looked up to growing up.

“I had many role models because I looked up to players I wanted to play like. The likes of Roy Keane, Michael Essien, Pirlo, even Mariga I used to study,” Wanyama said.
