  • Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has signed a new four years contract extension till 2027
  • Arsenal and Chelsea made unsuccessful attempts to sign the player in the January window
  • The player put up a public charade to force a move which has left fans surprised at the U-turn

The news of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo signing a new four years contract extension to stay at the South Coast club till 2027 with a club option of another year came as a surprise to many fans.

Caicedo was the subject of transfer bids from Chelsea and Arsenal in January. The Blues tested Brighton's resolve with £55m while their rivals went as high as £70m, both of which were rejected by the club and insisted on no sale.

The midfielder put up a show by releasing a public statement asking for a move and subtly confirming the bids received by the club are record fees in the history of the Seagulls.

Fans' reaction to Caicedo's new contract

As reported by North Stand Chat, the new contract given to the Ecuadorian midfielder has no release clause, which is a show of commitment on the player's part and a business strategy on the club's side.

Taking into account the public drama on Instagram and the exiling of the player from training in January, the contract extension looks more like a business than a commitment on both sides, as reported by Mirror UK.

Fans have spotted this strategy in different reactions on social media.

Reminder: Jack Grealish signed a new contract with villa months before his move to City. He inserted a release clause guaranteeing his move.

This is a win for Brighton alone; his evaluation fee is going to rise up to £100m, the same price to Declan rice. Top clubs must look for cheaper alternatives as the market is getting crazy high.

@ACVKENNY wrote:

There's no need to go for him again, Brighton now has all it takes to make his sale a very difficult one, and will be too expensive.

@VoiceArsenal wrote:

Probably with the clause if some of the teams come in they would allow him to speak with them.

@TonyHoze wrote:

This only means there’s a release clause included.. players do this to get the move for a pre-agreed fee… no negotiation drama like January. Remember Grealish as an example

Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the contract includes a significant pay rise for the player who was reportedly earning a paltry £3,500 per week.

Brighton players support Caicedo

Sports Brief earlier reported that Brighton captain Lewis Dunk revealed that teammates supported Caicedo after his move to Arsenal was denied.

Dunk admitted it was a difficult moment for the Ecuador international, who came from a family of 10 to see a move to a top club rejected, but support from teammates helped him deal with it.
