- Her father believed in instilling independence at an early age, that is why at 12 years, she was already running a cleaning business to make her own money
- She would also work at a burger shop in Michigan when she turned 15, from which she saved enough money to buy her first car
- The car did not serve her for long as it broke down after two weeks, but the feeling of having bought it with her own money was enough to fill her heart.

When you have a father who is not only a legend but also has one of the fattest bank accounts in the country, the world expects you to move around in top-of-the-range rides.
For Laila Ali, daughter to the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali, a car worth KSh 44,000 sufficed.
That is not to say that she wasn't aware the father was rich.
“We lived in a private gated neighborhood. I grew up in a mansion. We flew on private jets a lot of the time, and so it was very clear to me that my father was making a lot of money,” Laila revealed in a podcast interview with Andrew Hawkins.
Her father, however, believed in instilling independence at an early age, that is why at 12 years, she was already running a cleaning business in her neighborhood to make her own money.

She would also work at a burger shop in Michigan when she turned 15, a job she got while visiting the father.
"Everyone else was enjoying their summer, and I said, ‘You know what? I want to make a check. So I signed myself up for this job,” she continued.
It is from that job that Laila saved enough to buy herself her first car.
“I went through The Recycler magazine and brought this ’77 Toyota Celica. I can remember it was this brown rusty color, and it only cost me $400," she added.
The car did not serve her for long as it broke down after two weeks, but the feeling of having bought it with her own money was enough to fill her heart.
“I thought I was living the high life when I was riding in,” said Laila.
Although Laila went ahead to make millions from her own boxing career, those humble beginnings remain etched in her mind. She reiterates that they taught her “independence, responsibility and pride.”
