Lionel Messi winning the FIFA Player of the year award on Monday is still kicking up a storm.

The Paris Saint-Germain star took home The Best Men’s player award while Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez bagged the best goalkeeper gong at the awards.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who guided Los Blancos to Champions League and La Liga wins last season, would also lose out to Argentina’s Lionel Scaloni for the coach of the year award.

The siblings showed no mercy with the choice of winners on their Einfach mal luppen podcast, even pointing a finger at Argentina goalie Martinez.

What Toni Kroos said

Real Madrid midfielder Kroos was diplomatic and moderate when talking about Messi.

The central midfielder opined that the Argentine magician deserved to take the award this year based on his individual performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup which he won for the first time in his career with Argentina.

"In a year like this, after the World Cup, a tournament which is always so important when it comes to these prizes," said Kroos, via Marca. "He was the standout player there. So it wasn't a surprise."

However, Kroos' brother, Felix, believes that Karim Benzema should have won the Player of the Year award.

"He may have been the best player at the World Cup, but even so, we're talking about a whole year," said Felix. "I didn't think he stood out that much to have to [win it]. "It was clear Benzema should win after everything he did."

FIFA the Best joke award?

Felix Kroos labelled the Gala as a joke after Aston Villa custodian Martinez pipped Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois to scoop the best goalkeeper award.

"It was a joke for me that the Argentina keeper was also the best goalkeeper," said Felix. No one knew him before the World Cup and he only won it because of the World Cup.
"I didn't even think he was that good. He made one or two good saves, especially in the final, but he didn't give the best impression of being the best goalkeeper. It was a joke of a gala for me."

And that's when Toni quipped:

"That's why you looked in vain for Real Madrid at the gala."

Benzema aims another dig at FIFA

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Karim Benzema’s unhappiness over The Best FIFA awards continues.

The Real Madrid striker was nominated for The Best Men’s Player award alongside Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi but was beaten to it by the Argentinian.

The French attacker took to Instagram a day after the awards evening to share a photo of a post listing all his achievements during the judging period for The Best awards.
