Orphans from Becky's Foundation were left heartbroken following the death former Ghana winger and their major benefactor, Christian Atsu.

The winger supported the foundation through his Arms Around the Child non-governmental organisation.

The former Chelsea and Newcastle United player had 'adopted' the orphans and was building a school for the children before his death.

The winger tragically died following the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6.

His body was found under rubble on February 18 and preparations ahead of his burial are currently ongoing.

Meanwhile, some of the children from the orphanage struggled to hold back tears as they spoke about their relationship with the player.

Atsu is revered for his philanthropic work in Ghana and around the world.

The former Black Stars player's last involvement in football was in Hatayspor's game against Kasimpasa. The 31-year-old scored the winner only hours before the disaster hit.

Atsu made 65 appearances for his country, scoring nine goals for the national team. He was the best player at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015.

He also played for English clubs Chelsea, Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United.

Sports Brief also reported on fans of Newcastle United starting a fundraiser to complete a school which was being built by late Ghanaian footballer, Atsu.

The winger spent four seasons at St James Park, building a cult hero status at the club after helping them gain promotion to the English Premier League in 2017.
