Fans of Newcastle United have started a fundraiser to complete a school building by late Ghanaian footballer, Christian Atsu.

Atsu spent four seasons at the St James Park, building a cult hero status at the club after helping them gain promotion to the English Premier League in 2017.

The former Newcastle United winger tragically passed away following a devastating earthquake in Turkey early this month.

Atsu through nonprofit organisation Arms Around the Child started the construction of a school in Ghana.

“Christian Atsu was a well-loved figure on Tyneside and this has been highlighted by the scale of tributes paid to him by Newcastle United Football club and its fans," Talk of Tyneside, as quoted by myjoyonline.com.
“Following his passing, we were hoping to find a way to give supporters a way to show appreciation for his service to the club, and raising money for a fantastic charity that he worked with feels like the perfect way to do so.”
Ellie Milner from Arms Around The Child added: “Christian touched the lives of so many with his charity work, we are determined to keep his legacy alive by raising funds to finish the school buildings in Senya Beraku – and support the children he loved so much.”

Atsu's body arrived in Ghana on Sunday, February 19, 2023 as preparations begin for his final send off.

Former players mourn with Atsu's family

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former players of the Black Stars led by ex-captain Asamoah Gyan and midfielder Sulley Muntari have visited the Christian Atsu family following the death of the player.

Atsu tragically passed away following a devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023.

After 12 days of being trapped under rubble, the winger's lifeless body was recovered on February 18, 2023.
