McCarthy and Mabena were vital cogs in Orlando Pirates winning the Treble during the 2011/2012 season. The 35-year-old, who was 24 at the time, had already been influenced by the Red Devils' attacking coach back then and is not surprised by the impact he has had at Old Trafford under Erik Ten Hag.
Mabena said to IOL:
“He’s been my role model ever since I have been playing football. Seeing him coaching at Manchester United makes me proud. Ever since he got there, Marcus Rashford has been scoring regularly. We have to learn from him. He has done well consistently."
