The last two were already at the club; the other one had just handed in a transfer request at Liverpool.
In 2005, Gerrard inspired Liverpool to their fifth Champions League title but felt underappreciated by the club due to a stall in contract renewal.

Chelsea were ready to move in to sign the England midfielder, only for him to make an about-turn and remain at Anfield.
The Mourinho curse
Mourinho was understandably upset about Gerrard's decision and thereafter placed a curse on him, telling him he would regret his decision.
"It will be a loss for him. He can say 'I was European Champion at Liverpool' and that is correct, but I can tell him that in the next 10 years, we will compare trophies at Liverpool and Chelsea. And he will lose," Mourinho said as quoted by GMS.
True to the Special One's words, Chelsea went on to have a better spell than Liverpool not only under Mourinho, but the subsequent managers hired by Abramovich.
The Portuguese coach went on to win the Premier League trophy that evaded Gerrard for the whole of his career.

Pep Guardiola's comments on Gerrard
Sports Brief reported on Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola letting his emotions get the better of him, by referring to former Liverpool captain, Gerrard's famous slip in 2014 at his recent press conference.
Rivals are pushing that Man City be stripped of their titles if found guilty of over 100 FFP breaches. Liverpool will be the biggest beneficiary with three titles, leading the Spaniard to fire off volleys at them.
The former Aston Villa manager slipped in a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in 2014 to hand over the title to Man City, and Guardiola jokingly asked if they were responsible for the incident. He has since apologised.
