  • John Paintsil has suggested the appointment of Kwesi Appiah as part of Chris Hughton's team
  • The ex-Ghana defender believes the ex-Black Stars coach understands the team's culture better
  • Hughton previously coached both Brighton and Newcastle United before helping the Ghanaians

John Paintsil has suggested the inclusion of ex-Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah to the technical team of Ghana's national side, following the appointment of Chris Hughton.

The English manager replaced Otto Addo as Ghana's head coach after the ex-Dortmund player resigned at the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Paintsil, who played at two World Cups with the Black Stars, believes Hughton needs someone who understands the Ghanaian football culture if he is to succeed.

For the former Fulham and West Ham right-back, Appiah will be the best man for the role due to his experience.

“I don’t deem this as a new appointment because he was part of the team that went to Qatar, and I think he was vital in decision-making...” Paintsil told Mining City Radio as quoted by Football Ghana.
“So if he’s appointed, the only thing they have to add up is to appoint Appiah in the technical team to assist him."

Paintsil explained that while Hughton was accomplished in European football, he did not understand Ghanaian football culture.

“Ghana has a football culture and Appiah has been there for over 10 years, so he knows the 'in and outs', and I think he brought most of the young players. So going forward, if we wish for the best, he should be appointed to help Hughton.”

Hughton has been part of the Ghanaian technical team since March 2022, playing the role of a technical advisor.

He will be making his debut as coach of the Black Stars next month when the west Africans play Angola in the AFCON qualifiers.

Chris Hughton appointed Ghana coach

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Hughton being appointed head coach of the Ghana national team.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United manager will be assisted by ex-Aston Villa midfielder, George Boateng and former Ghana international, Mas Ud Didi Dramani.

All three technical men worked with ex-coach Addo during the World Cup in Qatar, with Hughton serving as technical advisor.
