  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be offered a way out of Chelsea after a disappointing time at Stamford Bridge
  • Aubameyang could not leave in January as he is not allowed to play for another club in Europe this season
  • However, he could revitalise his season by making the switch to America with Los Angeles FC reportedly interested

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's return to English football hasn't panned out as he had expected. After falling further down the pecking order at Barcelona following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, he turned to England with a point to prove to everyone.

His reunion with his former coach at Borussia Dortmund Thomas Tuchel lasted only 59 minutes with Graham Potter taking his place.

Under Potter, Aubameyang hasn't quite enjoyed much success with the striker often having to settle for a few minutes in favour of Kai Havertz.

It is believed he tried to negotiate for a move away with Barcelona and Athletico Madrid among the clubs interested in the Gabonese international. His attempts however hit a snag as he couldn't be allowed to move due to FIFA stipulations.

Why Aubameyang can't play for another club in Europe this season

Sports Brief had earlier reported that the rules dictate that a player cannot play official games for more than two clubs in the same season. Having already played for Barcelona and Chelsea, Aubameyang couldn't join any other club, unless it was back to Barcelona.

Further setbacks came when Chelsea signed Joao Felix and Potter dropped Aubameyang from his Champions League squad for the second part of the season.

However, there is a loophole that the 33-year-old can exploit in an attempt to look for game time elsewhere.

Overlapping seasons

The FIFA rule that a player cannot play official games for more than two clubs in the same season has a workaround. A player can, but he has to move to a league that has overlapping seasons. The Major League Soccer starts in February and thus doesn't use the same timeline as the English Premier League.

Furthermore, the EPL transfer window might be closed but the American window opened on Tuesday, January 31 and will close on Monday, April 24.

Football London reports that should Los Angeles FC be interested in pursuing the transfer, they would have to submit an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) to complete the signing.

Clubs Aubameyang can join the summer

Sports Brief has also reported that Aubameyang is staring at an uncertain future with Chelsea barely five months after he joined them.

The Gabonese striker joined the Blues on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2022 from Barcelona to seal a stunning return to the Premier League.

Aubameyang left the English topflight for Barcelona in January 2022 after a fallout with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.
