Jurgen Klopp Appears to Slam Chelsea Over Their Winter Transfers

• Jurgen Klopp has questioned how Chelsea are able to spend so much money on transfers
• Both teams are struggling in the league, and the recent draw did little to aid either of them
• Chelsea have spent upward of £151-million in January and are still aiming for more players

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp seemed to criticise Chelsea’s winter spending, as he maintains his challenge of rebuilding his team was the motivation behind signing a new contract.

Klopp penned a two-year extension with the Reds last April, which will see him stay at the club until the summer of 2026.

The Anfield landlords' 2022/23 campaign has been anything but straightforward, as they lie 10th on the log with more than half the season gone, 10 points adrift of the top four places.

Klopp is eyeing a summer rebuild at Liverpool, and claimed on the podcast Mike Calvin’s Football People that he did not owe the current batch of players any loyalty.

“It will not go overnight and imagine the situation now with another coach in the chair. I would be somewhere on holiday, and everybody would shout my name ‘with him it would not have happened!’ I’m obviously not a miracle worker," he said as quoted by the Mirror.

Klopp's dig at Chelsea

In the same podcast, Klopp also seemed to aim a dig at Chelsea and the manner in which new owner, Todd Boelhy was splashing cash on players.

So far in the winter transfer window, the Blues have acquired David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Benoit Badiashile, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke for a total cost of £151-million.

Klopp commented:

"Chelsea with new ownership, nobody knows exactly how they can spend that much money… nobody likes me talking about that. But transition needs time if you don’t have endless money, otherwise you can change overnight pretty much and bring in ten players."

At the moment, Liverpool’s only major signing has been Cody Gakpo, despite the fact that the club genuinely needs to bolster their midfield.

UEFA to stop Chelsea spending

Sports Brief also reported on UEFA possibly implementing measures to stop teams like Chelsea from overspending on transfers.

As it stands, the Blues have not broken any Financial Fair Play rules, but that might not be the case if the football body has its way.

UEFA intends on a contract limit of five years for a player at a club, with these new rules likely to be introduced before the summer transfer window.
