FootballBurnley Announces Lyle Foster After Teasing Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo With Shrek's Lord Farquaad
- Lyle Foster is currently the biggest story in South African football at the moment
- The Bafana Bafana striker was unveiled as Burnley's new acquisition in the transfer window's worst-kept secret
- The Potters announced his signing in the slickest and funniest fashion possible
Is Burnley signing Lionel Messi? Nope. What about Cristiano Ronaldo? Na ah.
Why, they are signing none other than Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster from Westerlo in Belgium. The Championship side based in Lancashire used clever humour from the 'Shrek' universe to announce the 22-year-old's acquisition.
It involved a conversation from the first Shrek movie, where the main antagonist Lord Farquaad has a vanity-fuelled conversation with the 'Mirror, Mirror On The Wall'. After hinting that the club's major signing would be either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, it turns out that it was none other than Foster himself.
TimesLIVE reported that the deal could be between R130-million and R190-million, a South African transfer record. Foster rose to prominence at Orlando Pirates, where after only playing nine matches in the 2018/19 season, he was quickly snapped up by France's Ligue 1 side Monaco as a possible replacement for Kylian Mbappe, who had departed for PSG not long before.

Foster nominated for top award
Last year, the sky and beyond were only the only current limit for Foster in Belgium.
He was nominated as one for the 2021/22 1B Pro League Player Of The Year Award, the Belgian second division's highest individual honour. Since joining K.V.C Westerlo from Portuguese side Vitória Sport Clube Futebol on loan, the 22-year-old was instrumental in helping the team win the championship and promotion to the Jupiler Pro Division, the country's top-flight.
