Nigeria national coach, Jose Peseiro has revealed that he is building a team to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast next year.

The Portuguese trainer took over as coach of the Super Eagles, after Augustine Eguaveon failed to see the three-time African champions to qualification for the World Cup in Qatar.

Peseiro took advantage of Nigeria's inactivity during the tournament to study the big African nations in particular.

According to Peseiro, the Super Eagles have what it takes to be back at the top of African football.

“Our ambitions when I signed the contract with Nigeria, the big goal and main goal, is we want to win the next AFCON,” Peseiro said as quoted by Mirror Football.

Peseiro lauded the fantastic tournaments of the likes of Senegal, Cameroon and Morocco at the World Cup, saying the power of these national teams was obvious.

"But we know that the quality and capacity of the national teams that didn’t play in the World Cup like Egypt, Algeria and others. I think I’ve convinced myself, when I watch our national team. I know which players can play for us and I have put it in my mind that we can win the next AFCON."

Nigeria reached the round of 16 at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, losing to Tunisia in the knockout stage.

The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, after the Black Stars of Ghana edged the team out via the away goals rule.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa paying a touching tribute to his late mother, Sarah Moses, four years after her painful demise.

The Super Eagles legend said the passing of his mother after a brief period of illness still affected to him, considering how close they both were.
