  • Dele Alli was once again criticised by his own manager in a brutal analysis
  • The midfielder was left on the bench again when Besiktas faced Akaragucu
  • His current coach Senol Gunes brutally claimed Alli did not deserve to play

Dele Alli’s career hit a new low on Wednesday, January 18, as he was brutally criticised by his own manager following Besiktas’ cup defeat to Akaragucu.

Alli, who is on loan at the Turkish club from Everton since last summer, is still struggling to rediscover the spark that made him one of the hottest prospects in football less than six years ago.

He moved to Everton from Tottenham Hotspur 12 months ago, but not even a spell at Goodison Park could reignite his form and he was eventually shipped out to the Super Lig.

Despite an initial positive start to life in Besiktas, things took a turn for the worse for Alli, who once again finds himself in a slump.

Only last month, he was withdrawn after only 28 minutes in a Turkish cup clash against Sanliurfaspor, to a chorus of boos from irate fans.

On Wednesday night, he hit a new low, as his own manager refused to back him by boldly declaring the attacker did not deserve to play his side’s latest cup match.

The last 16 clash ended in defeat for Besiktas, who lost 4-3 on penalties after regular time ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

“Dele Alli has had a good career, but he doesn't deserve to play at the moment,” Gunes said in his post-match interview as per Liverpool echo.

Gunes even asked during the interview that Alli not be discussed as a player, because he was 'below expectations in terms of efficiency'.

“I couldn’t affect the players. Now I can easily touch them, but we haven’t touched Dele Alli yet..."

What happened to Dele Alli?

Sports Brief earlier looked at the rise and fall of Alli, who went from earning annual young player awards to struggling for game time.

He spent two seasons at Milton Keynes Dons, before he agreed to sign with Tottenham Hotspur on February 2, 2015 on a five-year deal worth a fee of $5-million.

At Tottenham, he played for seven seasons before moving to a fellow Premier League side Everton on January 31, 2022, but soon fell down the order.
