  • Andre Schurrle left football fans stunned after a shirtless trek in the freezing mountains
  • The German winger, a World Cup winner in 2014, unexpectedly called time on his career
  • He now seems to have swapped the beautiful game for adventures in freezing conditions

Former Chelsea winger, Andre Schurrle recently took up an odd adventure as he was spotted trekking up a snowy mountain with minimal clothing.

Two-and-a-half years ago, Schurrle shocked the football world after he announced his decision to retire from football aged just 29.

At the time, he cited two things as his main reasons behind the decision to hang his boots - loneliness and unending competition within the sport.

One area where he will likely not find too much competition is hiking in temperatures that can go below negative-19 degrees Celsius.

Taking to his Instagram, Schurrle uploaded a series of shots. In the photographs, he can be seen without a top in freezing weather.

All the 2014 World Cup winner had on was a pair of shorts, a woolly hat, gloves and boots, in what is clearly an attempt to push his body to the limits.

The harrowing stunt was part of the Wim Hof experience, inspired by Dutch 'Iceman' Wim Hof.

Hof is infamous for being able to withstand extreme weather conditions like freezing temperatures, with little to no protective gear.

"[This is] the hardest mental and physical thing I ever did! The last minutes, I couldn’t feel anything and I had to find something deep inside me to keep going. An experience that I will never forget! -19 degrees, 100 km/h wind in our faces, heavy snow and rain! Schurrle explained on Instagram.

His post elicited admiration from his followers, and among the people who were stunned by his actions was his former teammate, Didier Drogba.

In the comment section, Drogba applauded Schurrle, as the Ivory Coast international admitted he would never be able to survive in such conditions.

“Fashion week Schurrle. Proud of you my man. My body would have stopped functioning right away,” Drogba wrote.

Former Chelsea star becomes pastor

Sports Brief also reported on how former Chelsea striker, Garvin Peacock is now a renowned pastor in Canada.

He was always a devoted Christian in his playing days and was so invested in his faith, he left a punditry job to take up a course in divinity at the Ambrose Seminary in maple leaf territory.

One of his last clubs before retirement was QPR, where he revealed in a 2013 interview that he had always been all about Jesus Christ, even while actively playing football.
