SAFA Reportedly in Search of Woman to Head 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup Bid

It looks like South Africa will be bidding to host its second senior FIFA World Cup in 2027.

It has all been confirmed that SAFA intends to host the women's showpiece event four years from now, preferably with a high-profile female figure as the head of the bid committee - one who has helped raise the profile of women in the local game.

The Sunday World published 'whispers in corridors' suggesting the likes of respected Kaizer Chiefs marketing director, Jessica Motaung and broadcasting legend, Carol Tshabalala are in consideration for this privilege.

Elsewhere, Goal reported that Minister for Sports, Nathi Mthethwa has together with his department, thrown their weight behind the incoming bid.

SA seeks World Cup hosting

The South African Football Association (SAFA) resolved to campaign for the honour of hosting the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, after an executive meeting last September.

The country bid for and was the host of a sensational men's FIFA World Cup back in 2010. SA hosted the 64 matches during the month-long tournament in 10 stadiums, of which five were built from scratch, while five others were given much-needed upgrades.

The United States of America is believed to be considering a bid of its own for either the 2027 or 2031 event.

Banyana drawn in nightmare group

South Africa has been drawn in a 'group of death' at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

African champions Banyana Banyana will be in Group F alongside Sweden, Italy and Argentina. The latest FIFA rankings place Sweden second in the world, while Italy and Argentina are 14th and 29th respectively.

Banyana is down in 54th as they prepare for a second consecutive world cup appearance, having made their bow at the outstanding and groundbreaking tournament in France in 2019.
