Emi Martinez: FIFA Launch Official Investigations Into Argentina Goalkeeper World Cup Celebrations vs France

FIFA have officially opened an investigation into the conduct of Emi Martinez following the widely publicised celebrations after the World Cup final.

Martinez celebrated widely with gestures that were termed offensive after helping Argentina to win the World Cup. Argentina beat France on post-match penalties on December 18th.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper was the hero of the game after making a point-blank save at the end of the game from Randal Kolo Muani before saving a penalty from Kingsley Coman.

His celebrations however later brought about much debate after he specifically targeted France star Kylian Mbappe. His actions have seemingly informed FIFA's decision to put out a statement which read in part,

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association due to potential breaches of articles 11 (Offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play) and 12 (Misconduct of players and officials) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, as well as of article 44 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Regulations in conjunction with the Media and Marketing Regulations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, during the Argentina v. France FIFA World Cup™ final," as quoted by Mirror.

The world governing body is also going after Croatia FA over what has been termed as potential breaches of matches during their third-place play-off match against Morocco.

Lloris slams Martinez

Sports Brief had earlier reported that retired French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has admitted he does not see himself resorting to boisterous antics like Emiliano Martinez during penalty shootouts.

Lloris came under some intense backlash for failing to make a save during France's 4-2 loss to Argentina during post-match penalties in the 2022 World Cup final.

While the Tottenham Hotspur custodian remained calm in between the sticks, his opposite number, Emiliano Martinez resorted to various antics to destabilize the French players.
