- The Blues wanted the Argentinian World Cup winner to bolster their midfield options
- Fernandez scored for Benfica and held the club badge, perhaps hinting he would stay
Argentina midfielder, Enzo Fernandez was named the tournament's best young player at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, after his exploits in the centre of the pitch helped La Albiceleste win the trophy.
He has since been a subject of transfer interest from top European clubs, with Premier League outfit Chelsea going into official negotiations with Benfica for his transfer.
Talks reportedly collapsed due to a disagreement over transfer fees, with the Portuguese club seeking his full release amount.
The 21-year-old has seemingly resigned to staying at Benfica, starting in and scoring in the 2-0 win over Varzim SC. His celebration - touching the club badge and pointing his finger downward - is believed to hint at a stay beyond January.

Did Fernandez send Benfica message
As reported by Football London, the transfer negotiations between Chelsea and Benfica for the former River Plate midfielder collapsed, despite the player already agreeing personal terms.
He played his first game, a Taca de Portugal match against Varzim, and scored the second goal. His gesture during the celebration suggests he is staying at the club, at least in this window, according to a video posted on Twitter.
According to Sports Illustrated, negotiations are still ongoing between the clubs, despite public perception of a damaged relationship and a collapsed deal due to Chelsea's 'attitude in negotiations'.
Chelsea accused of Benfica disrespect
Sports Brief earlier reported that Benfica boss, Roger Schmidt accused Chelsea of disrespect in how they approached negotiations for Fernandez.
