Jerome Rothen has weighed in on the discussion surrounding the successor of Hugo Lloris as the captain of France.
Lloris, France’s most-capped player, announced his retirement from international football earlier this week, leaving the French captaincy role vacant.
This has birthed a conversation about who replaces the 36-year-old Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper with Raphael Varane, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe tipped as potential successors.
Among the three, Varane and Mbappe stand tall with the Man United defender considered the natural replacement, considering his vice-captain role at the 2022 World Cup, per AS.

Meanwhile, a strong case has been made for Mbappe, who was filmed delivering a passionate halftime team talk during the World Cup final.
Rothen, a former French international, believes the role will suit Mbappe however France manager Didier Deschamps will not choose him.
"If it was me, Mbappé would be the new captain of the Blues. But knowing Didier Deschamps and his mode of operation, I think he will not put him as captain," he said as quoted by Sportskeeda.
Rothen explained: "Why? Because he does just too much noise."

Kylian Mbappe has been tipped to replace Hugo Lloris as the next captain of France.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward, who shone at the 2022 World Cup, is deemed the perfect replacement for the now-retired Lloris, who ended his international career as France’s most-capped player.
