Manchester United to appoint Sir Alex Ferguson's right-hand man as technical director

Mike Phelan, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's assistant coach, is reportedly set for a promotion at the club.

United are lining up the former player to become the club's first-ever technical director in what appears to be structural change at Old Trafford.

Phelan served as an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson for five years and made a return to United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after having left the club in 2013.

The 56-year-old temporarily vacated his position as sporting director with the Central Coast Mariners to join Solskjaer's technical bench.

His vast experience in football coaching has left Solskjaer desperate to have him beyond the ongoing season having been named club manager on a full-time basis.

According to Metro (UK), there have been discussions at United on how to integrate Phelan in a role further up the ladder.

If he lands the position, he will then become the club's first ever technical director as United have not had one before.

United's executive vice chair, Ed Woodward, had previously shown interest in hiring one, but former manager, Jose Mourinho, was reportedly not open to the move.

Meanwhile, the appointment of Phelan would see Michael Carrick promoted into the assistant manager's role, with Kieran McKenna also expected to move up the ladder.

TUKO.co.ke had earlier reported that Solskjaer has admitted his side now face a near impossible task of qualifying for Champions League following their 4-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday, April 21, at Goodison Park.

Two first half goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson and second half strikes from Theo Walcott and Digne is all the Toffees needed to inflict a damaging defeat on United.
