Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa believes Harambee Stars have everything it takes to win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title in Egypt.

Kenya will be returning to the continental showpiece for the first time in 15 years, having made their last appearance in the tournament in 2004.

Stars broke the more than a decade-long jinx after finishing second behind Black Stars of Ghana in Group F of the competition's qualifiers where they were drawn alongside Ethiopia and Sierra Leone.

The country's qualification was confirmed after the Confederation of African Football (Caf) announced Sierra Leone's disqualification.

The 2019 edition will now mark Kenya's sixth appearance in the competition, having featured in 1972, 1988, 1990, 1992 and 2004.

In the five appearances, the team has never progressed to the knockout stage, but somehow Mwendwa contends the current crop of players can defy all odds to make history in Egypt.

“I have told them (squad) that they can win this Cup, they can win this Afcon and if they win this Afcon, Kenya will turn around for them. I know if they win this Kenyans will show up for them and do something big for their lives," Goal.com quoted the FKF president.
“We tell Kenyans to look forward to it but whatever happens at Afcon, we have already exceed our expectations," he added.

Kenya has been pooled alongside Senegal, Tanzania and Algeria in Group C of the competition.

The squad is expected to jet out to Egypt from Spain on Wednesday, June 19 and will open their campaign against Algeria four days later.
