  • Liverpool's game vs Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield Stadium had some questionable VAR decisions
  • Wolves were denied a winning goal after VAR stuck to the on-field offside decision due to 'lack of camera angles'
  • Mohamed Salah's goal is also in question as he was in an offside porion before he received the ball

If you are a staunch football fan you will probably have already made peace with the fact that the Video Assistant Referee will always be controversial. Its implementation has continued to sharply divide fans and other stakeholders.

On January 7th, Wolverhampton Wanderers were on the receiving end when they travelled to Anfield to face the reigning FA Cup Champions Liverpool. Toti Gomes thought he had wrapped up a monumental victory for his side only for the linesman to step in and dampen the mood. VAR stood by the on-field decision.

Veteran referee Mike Dean was reportedly the one in charge of the VAR. His decision not to overrule the assistant referee drew intense backlash. From the naked eye, Wolves had done everything legally to get the ball past Alisson.

Lopetegui was certain it was a valid goal

Head Coach Julen Lopetegui and his assistant were seen having a quick glance at their tactical screen before making a beeline for the fourth official. The Spanish manager was convinced that it was a valid goal.

As Daily Mail reports, Matheus Nunes was reportedly the player in question. Nunes, a Liverpool target, took the corner which was initially cleared but the ball landed kindly back to him. The Portuguese playmaker then eased past one challenge before whipping the ball into the area.

Toti's goal

After a short scrappy affair, Toti slid the ball into the net and wheeled away into celebrations. Dean was called to provide a second opinion and decided to stick with the linesman's decision who had adjudged Nunes to be in an offside position when he received the ball back.

Why it was disallowed

Why would Dean make such a decision yet no angles showed Nunes in a clear offside position you may wonder. It has been reported that the no-nonsense referee did not have clear camera angles to dispute the linesman's call and in such situations, the VAR is often advised to stick with the on-field decision.

Technology, huh? Fails you when you need it most from a Wolves perspective. The result was a two-all draw forcing a replay at the Molineux in 10 days' time.

Alisson's costly mistake

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Alisson Becker was thoroughly ridiculed on social media after a howler in the FA Cup third round against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Liverpool goalkeeper inexplicably played the ball to Wolves attacker Goncalo Guedes, who could not believe his luck for his side’s opener.

Jurgen Klopp’s side came up against their Premier League opponents for the tie, with Cody Gakpo given his debut in a Liverpool shirt.
