Kely Nascimento has paid a heartwarming tribute to his father, Edson Arantes do Nascimento affectionately called Pele following his death.

Pele touted by many as the greatest footballer to have ever graced the sport passed on aged 82 after a long battle with cancer.

His condition failed to improve after he was readmitted to the hospital in Sao Paulo.

The three-time World Cup winner remained in hospital throughout the 2022 World Cup and then for Christmas, as his family confirmed, BBC reports.

Pele's daughter, Kely Nascimento, had been providing regular updates on her father throughout the month with the world learning of his ill health, before his death was confirmed on December 29, per GOAL.

Following the passing of his dad, Kely took to her Instagram handle to pay a touching tribute to the football icon, who lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, December 29.

"Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace," Kely wrote on the photo-sharing App, Instagram.

Pele passes on

Edson Arantes do Nascimento affectionately called Pele has passed on after a long battle with colon cancer.

Widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time, Pele died on Thursday, December 29 at age 82.

Pele, a three-time World Cup winner, had undergone treatment for colon cancer since 2021 and had been hospitalized for the last month with multiple ailments.

How Pele conquered the world

Sports Brief earlier reported that Pele burst onto the global stage at just 17 with dazzling goals as Brazil won the World Cup for the first time in Sweden in 1958.

While the 1954 World Cup had been broadcast live to a small European audience, 1958 was shown more widely and far more people owned television sets.

Pele, who crowned his career 12 years later in Mexico in the first World Cup broadcast in colour, was the first football star to play his entire career in the TV era.
