You read that correctly. The Uruguayan joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2018 and will have lived in the country for five years in the new year.

As reported by iDiski Times, this will make him eligible for South African citizenship. More importantly, this would make him eligible to play for Bafana Bafana.

"According to FIFA laws, a player with no biological links to the country he is playing in, is required to have stayed in that country for a period of five years to be considered eligible to change nationality."

When asked about this and if head coach Hugo Broos was mulling this over, South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan said:

“Well, that is what other countries do – they give them passports and they play, but we must not be opportunistic. One thing we don’t do, is that we don’t pick the team. That is the responsibility of the [technical] team and we don’t tell him what to do.
“The coach’s position is clear, that he doesn’t pick the team for only one game. He wants to pick a player for the future, but these are the issues that the coach will resolve.”
