- The attacker was waiting for a VAR decision before taking a spot-kick after Bruno Fernandes was tripped earlier in the game
- Ronaldo eventually scored two late goals after missing the penalty to inspire Portugal to a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland
Cristiano Ronaldo exhibited a bit of frustration in the early minutes of Portugal's World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.
The 36-year-old who recently returned to Manchester United on a two-year deal pushed Dara O'Shea while waiting for VAR to give a verdict on a penalty call.
Jeff Hendrick was said to have tripped Bruno Fernandes just nine minutes into their crunch encounter at Estadio Algarve.
His action however made some of the Irish fans question whether Ronaldo deserved to stay on the pitch while he failed to convert the spot-kick.
Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu who made his fifth appearance for his national team in the game stopped the kick from going into his net as reported by SunSport.
What some of the fans said
After the game, some travelling fans had their say as regards the incident earlier in the encounter with one saying:
"In the Premier League, that is a red card."
Another admitted that it was:
"Red all day lmao."
One added:
"How is that not a red?"
Another noted:
"Any other player gets sent off there."
The last person said:
"For a player who is all about respect and passion, that's a disgraceful act."
Meanwhile, the visitors drew the first blood in the 45th minute but two late goals from Ronaldo turned the situation around for the home team.
