Lionel Messi did not just win the World Cup with Argentina for the first time in his career, the 35-year-old did so by breaking many records in Qatar.

Messi scored twice as Argentina overpowered France in the World Cup final, albeit winning 4-2 via penalties following an enthralling 3-3 draw after extra-time.

According to Daily Post, the Guinness World Records disclosed that Messi broke five records in a post via its website following the conclusion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament last weekend.

They include Most Man of the Match awards won at the FIFA World Cup (11); first person to assist at five different FIFA World Cups; Most FIFA World Cup appearances as captain (19).

Messi also had the Most appearances in FIFA World Cup tournaments by a player (male, 5) and Most FIFA World Cup matches played by a player (26).

Messi set to sign new PSG contract

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has verbally agreed to sign a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain as the Argentina captain tries to sort out his future as soon as possible, The Hard Tackle reports.

The Argentine international has accepted a contract proposal from PSG, thereby handing a massive blow to former club Barcelona who have also indicated interest in re-signing the forward.

Messi has rediscovered his best form for PSG, becoming one of the club’s key performers in the 2022/23 season, and also capped it up by winning the World Cup with Argentina.

Lewandowski beats Messi to 2022 Golden Foot trophy

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Lionel Messi’s wait to win the elusive Golden Foot trophy will continue for at least one more year after missing out on the 2022 award.

The 2022 Golden Foot ceremony took place in Monaco on Wednesday, December 21 and Robert Lewandowski emerged victorious for the award given to players aged 28 and above.

The Golden Foot Trophy is the only award Lionel Messi is yet to win in his career after bagging the World Cup trophy last weekend.
