  • FIFA recently landed itself in trouble with fans after it declared Lionel Messi the football GOAT
  • The organisation made the claim via a tweet on Sunday after Argentina won the World Cup
  • The tweet did not go down well with a section of FIFA followers, who openly called them out

World football governing body FIFA has been forced to delete a tweet declaring Lionel Messi as the GOAT.

FIFA made the declaration on Sunday, December 18, shortly after Messi had helped Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar.

The PSG superstar was in flawless form during the recently concluded tournament, with the 35-year-old scoring seven times during the competition.

His triumph on the global stage with La Albiceleste saw many suggest that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has cemented his place as the greatest footballer of all time.

FIFA seemed to validate the claim as they tweeted:

“The GOAT debate is settled. The ultimate prize is now part of the collection. The legacy is complete," along with goat emojis.

FIFA faces backlash from fans

Sportbible reports that FIFA's tweet saw them face considerable backlash from fans, who accused the global football entity of bias.

While a section of their followers agreed with their GOAT claim, there are those who were quick to express their displeasure.

One tweeted:

“FIFA deleted this tweet after getting called out for being biased and receiving backlash."

A second noted:

“A professional account of the biggest football organisation in the world."

While a third quipped:

“This was absolutely disgusting to see by FIFA. Still can’t believe they put the tweet out.”

Meanwhile, FIFA now seems to have since removed the tweet, with the post no longer appearing on its timeline.

GOAT debate is not over

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on fans still sharing varied opinions on whether Ronaldo and Messi is better, in the wake of the 2022 World Cup.

The Qatar edition of the global football tournament was touted to settle the never-ending GOAT debate, as the two football greats made their fifth and likely final appearances in the competition.

Argentina's World Cup glory had many suggesting that Messi has effectively cemented his place among the all-time football greats, but not everyone agrees.
