The 35-year-old's appearance in the final means he has now played 26 World Cup matches, one more than previous record holder Lothar Matthäus, according to AS.

His brace on Sunday means he’s the only player to have scored in the group stages and in each knockout round in the present format.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward also become the first player to win the Golden Ball in two different tournaments (he also won in 2014) and he has now become the all-time South American top goalscorer in international tournaments ahead of Ronaldo Nazario da Lima.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has been in sensational form at the ongoing 2022 World Cup, with his contribution helping Argentina reach the final.

The goal was enough to earn Messi a place in history books, with ESPN reporting that the Argentine is now the first player to make 20 goal contributions at the World Cup since 1966.
