  • Lionel Messi fulfilled a career-long ambition by lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy
  • He proved the man by scoring two goals in the final and converting his penalty in the shootout
  • His jersey was immediately branded with the third star signifying Argentina's third trophy

Lionel Messi got his crowning moment as he led Argentina to a FIFA World Cup triumph at the Lusail stadium in Qatar yesterday, the only trophy eluding his storied career.

It proved to be one of the most dramatic finals ever but as the popular phrase ''it was written in the stars'' Argentina and Leo triumphed over defending champions France.

FIFA allows for the crest of past World Cup winners to be surrounded by stars, one for each triumph. France and Argentina went into the match as two-time World champions and Argentina got their third.

Messi's jersey was immediately branded with the third star as he lifted the trophy and was carried around in similar style to Diego Maradona after the 1986 World Cup.

Three stars for Messi

It remains to be seen whether it was the backroom staff of the reigning world champions or teammates of Lionel Messi who added the third star to his jersey.

As spotted by ESPN FC, as the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was carried around the stadium with the trophy in his hand, a third star signifying the world titles for Argentina was already added to his crest.

The former Barcelona captain cemented his place as the all-time greatest and also sat next to Diego Maradona amongst the Argentine fans by winning the World Cup.

Messi reacts to World Cup win

Sports Brief earlier reported what Messi said after the historic Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup win to seal his place in football history.

The Argentina captain who scored twice in the final took to his Instagram page to express his happiness and also thanked everyone for the amazing journey to fulfil his dream.

He confirmed it was his last World Cup match but wants to play a few more matches for the national team to have the feeling of playing as world champions.
