Aguero decided to retire from football in December 2021 due to a heart condition, shortly after moving to Barcelona. He was hoping to play with Messi in Catalonia, but the Argentine captain left to join PSG, per ESPN.

Aguero's message to Messi

After hours of celebration, Aguero took to Twitter to send a message to his pal about his latest success. The former Argentina international was spotted with the World Cup trophy and it felt like he was part of the team.

"The best in the world has to win the world cup. I love you friend ."

Messi scored a double in the game against France in one of the best World Cup finals ever. Les Bleus twice came from behind and were inspired by Kylian Mbappe's historic hat-trick.

35-year-old Messi now takes La Albiceleste's third World Cup title, the first since Diego Maradona won it for the South American nation in 1986 in Mexico, per Reuters.

Messi reacts to Mundial glory

Sports Brief earlier reported on Messi reacting to World Cup triumph, saying he couldn't believe what just happened.

Most fans seemed to acknowledge that a tournament win in Qatar would tip the PSG man as the greatest footballer of all time.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner thanked his teammates, family and fans for supporting him throughout the journey.
