Lionel Messi finally got his hands on the Jules Rimet trophy after Argentina beat France in an epic final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Messi said his dream was finally fulfilled as he lifted the trophy which was a crowning achievement of his illustrious career.
Messi and Argentina had to survive a Kylian Mbappe masterclass, as the young Frenchman scored a hat trick in a historic performance. Mbappe scored two late goals to stun the South Americans who thought they had won the game.
The Argentina captain thought he had won it in extra time but Mbappe hit back again with a penalty. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez produced a stunning stop to deny France last in extra time.

France duo Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni missed their penalties in the shootouts after the sensational 3-3 ending.

A few hours after the game, the seven-time Ballon d'Or and World Cup winner took to Instagram to send a message to his fans, family, teammates and country after delivering a third trophy for his nation.
He scored twice for La Albiceleste, breaking the deadlock from the penalty spot in the first half and netting again in extra time, per Eurosport.

Emotions ran high after the final whistle with Messi's mother running onto the pitch to congratulate her son. In a video spotted by Sports Brief, Celia 'ambushed' Messi from behind before giving him a warm embrace.
