The Spanish midfielder was signed by Louis Van Gaal in 2014 and became an important part of the club under the Dutchman and Jose Mourinho.

His five-year spell at Old Trafford was relatively successful. He won the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup, the most successful period at the club since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Herrera opens up

Speaking in Man United's podcast an emotional Herrera described the situation that saw him leave the club. He revealed that the club did not offer him a new deal, a decision which angered him.

While talking about his departure, he was overcome with emotion which forced him to take a break from the interview.

"That was painful for me, honestly. I think I deserved it and they didn't do it. After, the conditions changed because I was not happy with that little moment with the club."

He added that he expected more from the club.

"I fight for the club until the last day, no problem at all, I respected my contract until the last day. But they didn't come at the right moment in my opinion."

The 33-year-old went on to play at PSG but wanted to return to his boyhood club after minutes became hard to come by. He left the French giants with two years left in his contract, per talkSPORT.

He played just 19 Ligue 1 games during the 2021/22 campaign.

Messi's tribute to Herrera

Sports Brief earlier reported on Lionel Messi penning a beautiful tribute to Herrera as he left PSG.

Herrera left the club before the end of the transfer window on September 1st. He rejoined his boyhood club, Athletic Bilbao.

"And good luck to you, too, Herrera. It was lovely to meet you, I appreciate how you welcomed me from day one and I wish you the best on your return to La Liga."
