However, Messi's astonishing numbers in front of goal and longevity at the top level surely make him the best in this generation alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the eyes of younger fans, Messi's status as GOAT will be cemented with a World Cup win. The Messi and Ronaldo debate has raged for years with both amassing millions of followers from all over the globe.

Ardiles on why Maradona is the best

Speaking to Talksport, Ossie, 1978 World Cup winner with Argentina said Messi can only be at the same level as Maradona even if he wins the World Cup.

"I would say that he can only go level with Maradona, and I personally would go for Maradona. Because when we played football I think it was much more difficult for a skillful player to play, so this is why I will say Maradona."

Ossie played alongside the late, great Maradona in a different era where the turf was a bit tough and unforgiving for flair players.

He added Maradona is slightly better than Messi.

“He will always be a touch, touch, touch better than Messi.”

Messi has scored 797 goals in his career while Maradona has netted 194 goals, according to Transfermarkt. Messi is also Argentina's all-time top scorer at the World Cup.
