Messi scored from the penalty spot to record his 11th World Cup goal of his career and surpass the legendary Gabriel Batistuta.
Messi became Argentina's leading goal scorer as a result of the goal.

The landmark goal also came on the day that Messi tied German legend, Lothar Matthäus, for the most appearances by a male footballer at the World Cup. Both players have appeared in 25 games.
Messi also drew level with Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot award at the tournament. Both Paris Saint-Germain stars have scored five goals each.
