  • Argentina international Enzo Fernandez could be on his way to EPL giants Liverpool
  • The Reds reportedly signed a pre-contract agreement with the talented 21-year old
  • Fernandez signed for Benfica in Portugal from Argentine side River Plate in June

Liverpool have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sign talented Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Since making his way to Estadio da Luz in June, Enzo has made a name for himself for both club and country.

In 24 appearances, the $12m (£10.3m) star has managed three goals and five assists in 24 appearances for Benfica, in performances that earned him a spot in Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina side.

At the World Cup, the young midfielder has continued to show his worth, scoring once and assisting as the Copa America winners powered through to the semi-finals in Qatar.

He is expected to be at the starting line-up when Argentina face Croatia on Tuesday, December 13.

According to Portuguese outlet Record and Spanish publication Diario AS, Real Madrid and Manchester United are among those interested in Enzo, but Liverpool have the upper hand.

However, a signature may not come easy, as the 21-year old reportedly has a massive €120 million (£103 million) on his contract in Portugal.

He was asked earlier in the season whether he fancied a move to one of Europe’s big guns, and his answer left room for speculation.

"Calmly, humbly, with a low profile. I try to work day by day to keep improving and growing. Luckily I'm finding regularity, continuity and my teammates and the coaching staff help me a lot. I handle it well."

Meanwhile, Liverpool returned to match action on December 11, where they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Lyon in the first of two games in the Dubai Cup.

Jurgen Klopp and his wards will return to competitive football on December 22, when they take on Manchester City in the EFL Cup before a Boxing Day fixture against Aston Villa.

Liverpool interested in Sofyan Amrabat

Sports Brief also reported on Liverpool’s interest in Sofyan Amrabat, the talented Morocco midfielder.

Amrabat is currently attached to Fiorentina in the Serie A, but that might not be the case in the summer as the English club are highly interested in his services.

The 26-year-old has been one of the standout players in Qatar, and his performances - especially against Spain in the Round of 16 - have attracted interest from a number of European giants.
