  • Bruno Fernandes has been accused of copying the ingenious free kick by the Netherlands
  • Fernandes spurned an opportunity to get Portugal back into the game against Morocco
  • The Netherlands pulled off a magnificent free kick the night before against Argentina

Bruno Fernandes provided a comical moment when he attempted to execute a clever free kick, during Portugal's World Cup quarter-final game against Morocco.

Fernandes tried to use a method that worked for the Netherlands a day earlier when they played Argentina in another quarter-final game. The Dutch executed a free kick routine straight from the training session that bore fruits.

That Dutch freekick

With barely than a minute left on the clock, and with the Dutch trailing by a goal and staring at World Cup elimination, Teun Koopmeiners masterminded a daunting but clever free kick.

With almost everyone in the stadium expecting him to go for a top corner, the Atalanta midfielder rolled the ball to Wout Weghorst, who found the back of the net beautifully.

They were still eliminated via post-match shootouts, but that goal remains one of the most beautiful free kick goals in World Cup history.

What did Fernandes do?

Fans have now claimed that Fernandes was trying to pull off something similar with Portugal.

With the Euro 2016 winners behind against the Atlas Lions and less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Fernandes was tasked with producing a moment of genius from a promising free kick position.

Whether deliberate or not, Fernandes attempted to roll the ball to his teammate, but his pass was cut off by a Moroccan player before it even got into the box.

It was a wasted chance as a patched-up North African side withstood the pressure to become the first African side to qualify for a World Cup semi-final.

Bruno speaks on Mundial elimination

Sports Brief had earlier reported that midfielder Fernandes broke his silence after Portugal's shock exit from the 2022 World Cup.

The Selecao were stunned by dark horses Morocco, who beat them 1-0 through a superb header from Youssef En-Nesyri late in the first half.

The Europeans, one of the pre-tournament favourites, began the game strongly with Joao Felix getting a few chances to open the scoring. However, Atlas Lions goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a solid display throughout the match.
