Kylian Mbappe left Marcus Rashford a consoling post, following England's elimination from the World Cup in Qatar.

France beat England 2-1 at the Al Bayt Stadium to knock out the Three Lions and keep alive their hopes of retaining a title they won in 2018.

Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud got the goals for the defending champions, as Harry Kane scored the consolation goal from the penalty spot. The England skipper missed another decisive penalty which would have levelled things up for his side.

Rashford, like any other England player, was devastated by the elimination. The Manchester United forward was introduced in the 85th minute for Phil Foden. He has been in glittering form in Qatar with three goals to his name before their exit.

Rashford's statement

The 25-year-old saw his free kick in the last minute of extra time go over the bar with Hugo Lloris beaten. After the game, he took to social media and wrote:

"The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions, each and every one of our team gave everything we had to be ready for what was thrown at us, we got close, but not close enough. I'll make a promise that we will come again! Thank you for the unconditional support we have received throughout the tournament, it hasn't gone unnoticed."

Mbappe responded by dropping a love emoji for Rashford. The English player in turn replied by wishing the French star all the best for the remainder of the competition.

France will face Morocco in the semi-finals, with the winner between Argentina and Croatia awaiting in the final.

Mbappe vs Walker

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Kylian Mbappe vs Kyle Walker lived up to the hype, when England met France in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Walker was tasked to keep tabs on Mbappe, who has been superb in Qatar. The contest was interesting to watch, as the Three Lions slowed the French golden boy down.

Walker had indirectly delivered a warning to the PSG superstar in the build-up to the game, saying he wasn't going to roll out the carpet for him.
