  • Morocco have enjoyed a fine run of results so far at the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar
  • The north Africans have conceded only once during their incredible campaign that has seen them reach the semis
  • Croatia, Belgium, 2010 World Cup winners Spain, and Portugal are some of the top teams Morocco have faced on their way to the last four

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has opened up on the motivation behind his side's stunning 2022 World Cup campaign.

The Atlas Lions have been in flawless form in Qatar, with the side inking their names in history books following their win over Portugal on Saturday.

The north Africans silenced Portugal 1-0 during their quarter-final meeting to become the first country on the continent to advance to the last four in the history of the tournament.

Regragui's men topped Group F which also included Canada, Belgium, and Croatia to set up a meeting with Spain in the round of 16.

Morocco went on to see off the 2010 World Cup champions via a penalty shootout to land a fixture against Portugal in the last eight.

Regragui speaks on Morocco's Qatar journey

Reacting to his side's win over Portugal, Regragui revealed the drive behind his team's stunning World Cup campaign.

According to the tactician, the desire to right history for Africa gave them the extra push during their meeting with Ronaldo's Portugal.

"We're drawing on all we have, we still have guys injured. I told the guys before the match we had to write history for Africa. I'm very, very happy," he said via Goal.

Additionally, Regragui is also the first African coach to lead an African team to the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Fernandes blames referee for loss to Morocco

Sports Brief earlier reported on Fernandes blaming the referee for Portugal's exit from the tournament.

The match referee Facundo Tello, his two assistants and the video assistant referee were all from Argentina.

Portugal's main complaint was that too little had been in their clash with Morocco, critical of supposed time-wasting by the North African side in the second half.

Bruno Fernandes complained that far more injury time should have been added and that referees from teams still involved in the tournament should not be appointed to matches.
