France further proved their world champions quality by beating England 2-1 in the quarter-final of the ongoing Qatar 2022 World Cup and taking one step towards retaining their title.

The build-up to the match had a lot of talking points but in the end it was current world champions and UEFA Nations League holders who proceeded.

England captain Harry Kane will be left hurt by his penalty miss in the 85th that could have tied the scores and Olivier Giroud's header earlier proved decisive.

French boss Didier Deschamps has now failed to comment on extending his stay beyond the World Cup even if France go all the way to retain the title they won in Russia.

Deschamps mute on future

The former France captain has been in charge of the national team for 10 years having been hired to replace Laurent Blanc after Euro 2012.

He has overseen two UEFA Euro tournaments and three World Cups and has made at least one final of every tournament he has coached Les Bleus to.

According to GFFN, FFF had an agreement with Deschamps that he will be able to decide his own future if France reach at least the semi-final of the World Cup.

Speaking to L'equipe after the win over England, Deschamps refused to comment on his future and is fully focused on the semi-final match against Morocco.

“It’s up to me so I’ll decide. I’ll be here for the semi-final, then we’ll see. All in good time. It’s good to be reaching objectives set by your president. I want to savour what we’ve just done.” he said.

Deschamps praises underappreciated Southgate

Ahead of the match, Sports Brief earlier reported that Deschamps praises his opponent Southgate who he feels is underappreciated by the English fans.

Deschamps faced similar criticism of being conservative that Southgate faced in England, but the 2018 World Cup triumph changed the hearts of the France football fans.

Southgate's time as England boss could be nearing the end after the quarter-final elimination at the World Cup.
