Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has broken his silence after Brazil and Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus underwent knee surgery. Jesus is expected to be out for a while, dealing a blow to the Gunners' title charge.

Jesus sustained a knee injury at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In Brazil's final group game against Cameroon, Jesus started the game but was taken off after an hour of action.

The 25-year-old underwent surgery two days ago to repair a medial collateral ligament injury, but the timeline of his return has not yet been revealed.

The Arsenal striker was expected to miss between three to four weeks of action but there are growing fears recovery will take much longer than that, according to Football.London.

The Brazil international has been an influential figure for Arteta's side this season. They sit top of the Premier League table; five points clear of reigning champions Manchester City, and it remains to be seen how they will cope without him.

Arsenal confirmed their forward successfully underwent the surgery, which ruled him out of the ongoing World Cup.

According to Football.London, Arteta said the injury definitely affects his team and hinted they may be forced to go into the market in January.

"What It affects is who we are as a team because he gives us so much. What we can do after that when we know the timescale better and we have when we can have him back we will look at the options and try to make the right decisions."

If Jesus misses two months of action, he could miss some crucial games for the Gunners. According to 90min, he could miss important games against Newcastle United, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

The ex-Man City man scored five goals and provided six assists to help the north London club to the top of the table at Christmas for the first time since 2007.

Thuram to replace Jesus?

Sports Brief earlier reported on Arsenal legend Ray Parlour urging Arsenal to move in for France striker Marcus Thuram to replace the injured Jesus.

Thuram's deal with German side Borussia Monchengladbach ends in the summer. Therefore, they could land him for a bargain deal in January.

The France striker is just what the Gunners need. He is a natural striker, fast and physical. He could complement Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard.
